I see that Dylan has topped another one of the silly all time greatest artist polls in front of Presley and Michael Jackson ( as an individual because the Beatles were first ). Still...it must say something about the power of his music.
The new Bootleg Series should provide us with a major sound improvement ....compare the tremendous sound of the previously released Bootleg Series piano version "Times A-Changin'" to the actual bootleg.
For what its worth, I am disappointed to see that they have sleeve notes by Griel Marcus( or is this the Mono releases ). I would much prefer to have the thoughts of a performer who has some real understanding of what it is to "write a song and perform it in front of 10 or a 1000 people". I guess the list of artists who would dearly love to show their respect would include Beck, Eddie Vedder,Jack White,Sinead O'Connor,Elvis Costello,Patti Smith, Frank Black, Billy Bragg,Kurtis Blow and Gillian Welch. Never mind..record companies never do these things right.
Looking further ahead...I would prefer a new album or a live Universty Tour 2004 album which would demonstrate, that despite the fact that he was 63 and has an old and ravaged voice, he was still able to create some of the best music in the autumn of his years ( "Gone To The Finest Scchools" 4 cd bootleg in the mean time will suffice ).
Yeah, "all time artists" who all lived in the last 50 years. Rolling Stone had their "500 Greatest Songs of ALL TIME" - and this was topped by Dylan.
No Mozart, no Schubert, no Wagner, no Bach. Still, Cyndi Lauper made it in, so it must be definitive, right? I'm not being snobbish, but these lists are more dubious than some of Bob's own...
