Hi, I'm currently writing a critical essay for my university course on Dylan, entitled: 'Polotics and Poetry'. I'm looking at a few of his protest songs, the political background and analyse his lyrics as poetry to asses how these issues affected him and what messages he was trying to portray through his lyrics.
I have only just come across your blog and any help or advice would be much appreciated.
I think you should get hold of Mike Marqusee's book "Chimes of Freedom", which deals specifically and very well indeed with "the politics of Dylan's art". Look at http://www.mikemarqusee.com/?p=11
Michael, I've located a very nice block of clips for the June 22nd performance with fine audio quality. At the rate things vanish I'm not sure I even want you to mention this on the blog. In any event it's clear Dylan has been taking considerable care with his singing with I think impressive results. Of course I've found merit where you see little or none over the past decade, but I wonder if you agree the most recent shows are mostly very impressive and not a few moments or perhaps a song or two of interest? I'm even wondering if he's quit, or perhaps cut down on his smoking, because he's finding areas in his voice which were parched for a good spell. Patrick Ford
Thanks Pat. Of course if you really didn't want your comment published on the blog, you could always have sent me an e-mail message instead, at: michael@michaelgray.net
