Flashback: August 17, 2004. Went inside the British Museum to look at the Reading Room, the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles - including, among these last, the panel labelled South Frieze XLIV, 132-136, with its touching depiction of a heifer, its big head straining upwards to be free: so recognisably a bovine posture. This is the scene thought to have been alluded to by Keats, in 'Ode on a Grecian Urn': "that heifer lowing at the skies". Don't we all?
Hi Michael - Erm, this is not anything to do with Toronto, just a general question - I've got the encyclopedia and am enjoying it but can't find Hattie Carroll or William Zantzinger in there...! Can this be true?
ReplyDeletePaul, you're right... the song is referred to on pages 6, 26, 86, 154, 185, 188, 206, 233, 237, 513, 520 and 573 - as specified in the book's index - but no, as it happens there are no entries for its two main real-life characters. Time was a jet-plane: it moved too fast.
